Summary of talks

Prof PJ Narayanan mentioned how IIIT Hyderabad, which started in 1998, differs from most other institutes as far as its objectives are concerned. He said, one of the core objectives of the institute had been to promote research at the undergraduate level, which required tweaking of curriculum to suit the need. This has reaped rich dividends for the institute as its undergraduate students now head various research positions in premier institutions in India or abroad. Research aptitude involves inculcating skills to solve problems even as prior information about solutions remain unknown. This requires knowledge about various disciplines and the larger environment with which the problem is connected to. Any ordinary person who has a curiosity to learn and a deep sense of inquiry would be able to do good research. Towards the end, Prof PJN hoped that some of the students attending this workshop would take up internships at IIIT and also think of associating with the institute through research projects or as a research student later on.
